+Heal The Bay

Yesterday’s blog was a focus on the eco system in which planet Earth functions and how buying local and organic can attribute to the overall health of this system. When we analyze the components that make an ecosystem function, one of the most necessary of these is water.

Water is of major importance to all living things; in some organisms, up to 90% of their body weight comes from water. Up to 60% of the human body is water, the brain is composed of 70% water, and the lungs are nearly 90% water.  Are you feeling thirsty yet?  Communities of organisms that are dependent on each other and on their environment live in what we call aquatic ecosystems, like the Santa Monica Bay for example.

What happens when that water becomes polluted?

Since 1985, the Heal the Bay organization has made it their mission to protect the rivers, beaches and our ocean.  These bodies of water are not only incredible natural resources but are special spiritual sanctuaries to anyone and everyone who beholds them. Could you imagine a surfer surfing in a sea that looks like the one pictured above?

Heal the Bay’s mission is to educated the media and government agencies, along with people like you, about the causes and effects of pollution on the Bay. Today, the greatest threats to California’s coastal waters and watersheds, and to humans and animals – that rely on the ocean for pleasure, income or sustenance, are:

* urban and storm water runoff

* plastic pollution

* over-fishing

* climate change

You may not realize how much impact even one person can have on the above issues. It’s important that humans become educated, and use the brains we’re so lucky to have, to do good and protect the world we live in. Contributing to the healing of the ecosystem can be as small as taking a bus instead of driving or using a reusable water bottle instead of buying a new one.

+Beryll designer Sigmar Berg employs many eco-friendly practices in his design studio and store. Besides using organic cotton and other materials, each +Beryll piece is handcrafted in LA, which means the carbon emissions are next to none since +Beryll products don’t have to be shipped back and forth from China. Imagine : buying locally produced apparel and accessories could save over 1/3 of China’s CO2 emissions! (click here to read more on that)

Besides being advocates of environmentally friendly manufacturing and design, the +Beryll team is also an avid supporter of the Heal the Bay organization! Click here to find out more about Heal the Bay and hopefully you too will become a supporter.

It’s up to us to make conscious decisions and protect the world we live in – from sea to shining sea.
