Beryll Conversations: Art, Authenticity, and Collecting
+Beryll Founder Petra Berg sits down with renowned international Art Advisor Thomas Wuestenhagen for insights into the art world.
Petra: Thomas, what first drew you into art?
Thomas: I began studying Art History in Vienna and continued at Christie’s in London. Returning to Vienna, I worked with Ursula Krinzinger, an iconic figure in the art scene. Eventually, I opened Layr Wuestenhagen gallery with Emanuel Layr, promoting emerging Austrian artists internationally.
Petra: After running your own gallery, you made quite a leap.
Thomas: Yes! Art Basel hired me to become Global Head of Gallery Relations, overseeing fairs in Basel, Miami, and launching Hong Kong. It was thrilling to further deepen connections across galleries, artists, and collectors.
Petra: You then moved to Asia—quite a bold step!
Thomas: Absolutely. Moving to Hong Kong was a life-long dream. As the International Director of Art021 Contemporary Art Fair in Shanghai, I witnessed the Asian art market boom firsthand. It was fascinating.
Petra: And now you're in Bangkok?
Thomas: Yes, during the pandemic, I transitioned to Bangkok and embraced life as an international art advisor. Today, location matters less than your global network.
Petra: Who were your greatest influences?
Thomas: Ursula Krinzinger, undoubtedly. Working alongside a legend shapes your approach profoundly.
Petra: What does authenticity mean in art collecting?
Thomas: Trust your personal taste but prioritize quality. Start collecting through reputable galleries and experienced advisors—Art Basel galleries, for instance, meets very high standards.
Petra: Speaking of Art Basel, how selective is the process?
Thomas: Extremely. Out of roughly a thousand applicants, only about 200-300 galleries exhibit at each fair. Consistency, quality, and a compelling program are essential.
Petra: Tips for new collectors?
Thomas: Train your eye. Immerse yourself in top museums and galleries. Quality and informed personal taste are key.
Petra: Finally, what is art to you personally?
Thomas: My life and inspiration. Art enriches daily living, sparking constant joy and discovery.
